Werther’s Original began in the small town of Werther, Germany, in 1909, where confectioner Gustav Nebel created the caramel candy that would eventually become known around the world. Werther’s Original is made by Storck, the family-owned German candy company behind brands such as Riesen, Mamba, Merci, and Toffifay. All Werther’s Original products are still made in Germany today. Classic hard caramels remain the candy most closely associated with the brand, but Werther’s now makes soft, chewy, filled, chocolate-covered, sugar-free, and caramel popcorn products as well. Werther’s Original is sold in more than 100 countries, making it one of Storck’s most widely distributed brands.
