About Dare Candy

Founded in 1889 by Charles H. Doerr, Dare began when he started producing and selling cookies and candy from a small grocery store in Kitchener, Ontario, which was then known as Berlin. The candy and baked goods eventually replaced the store’s general merchandise, and the C.H. Doerr Company incorporated in 1919 as its manufacturing and regional distribution expanded. In 1945, the company and family name were legally changed from Doerr to Dare to make the name easier to pronounce outside the local community. Dare remains a privately owned Canadian family business and is now headquartered in Cambridge, Ontario.
