View full detailsCreated by London-based Smith & Company in the 1780s, Altoids are known for their strong flavor concentration. Like many traditional candies, peppermint lozenges were originally created for medicinal purposes. In the 1700s, people consumed the "curiously strong mints" to relieve digestive discomfort. In the 1920s, the brand advertised its mints as an antidote to poisons in the stomach. Today, most enjoy candies as a breath freshener.
Over the years the popular mint brand has offered several different products to maintain pace with consumer trends. From 2007 to 2008, consumers could find dark chocolate-dipped varieties in cinnamon, ginger, and peppermint. Other flavors the brand has historically debuted include honey, licorice, creme de menthe, and non-dipped ginger.
The brand has also experimented with delivering its bold flavors in different textures. In 2001, the company introduced sour hard candies. Ultimately, the Sours were discontinued in 2010. A sugar-free gum product was introduced in 2003 but also discontinued in 2010.
Currently, Altoids are available in four flavors: peppermint, wintergreen, spearmint, and cinnamon. The brand also now has an Arctic line that includes Arctic Strawberry along with the original flavors. Arctic mints have the added benefit of being sugar-free. Therefore, they are a flavorful, powerful mint that is safe for diabetics. The Arctic line is a rebranding of Wrigley's Elipse mints.
