About Spangler Candy

Spangler Candy Company began in Bryan, Ohio, in 1906 when Arthur G. Spangler purchased the Gold Leaf Baking Company for $450 and moved the business to Bryan. Candy was added to production in 1908, and by 1920, confectionery had completely replaced the company’s original baking and household products, prompting the name change to Spangler Candy Company. Still family-owned today, Spangler has grown into a major American candy manufacturer and one of the world’s largest lollipop producers. Its Bryan facility produces Dum-Dums, candy canes, Circus Peanuts, Necco Wafers, Sweethearts, Bit-O-Honey, Canada Mints, and other candy.

Spangler acquired Dum-Dums in 1953 and Saf-T-Pops in 1978, while its Circus Peanuts recipe dates back to 1940. More recently, Spangler helped preserve several historic American candy brands by acquiring Necco Wafers, Sweethearts, and Canada Mints following the NECCO bankruptcy in 2018, followed by Bit-O-Honey in 2020. Today, its broader collection covers lollipops, sugar wafers, marshmallow candy, mints, chewy honey-and-almond candy, candy canes, and seasonal sweets.
