Cincinnati-Style Gold Star Chili

Known throughout Greater Cincinnati for chili spaghetti, 3-Ways, cheese coneys, burgers, and regional comfort food, Gold Star Chili is one of the area’s most familiar Cincinnati-style chili brands. Its restaurant roots go back to Mount Washington on Cincinnati’s east side, where the Daoud brothers turned a hamburger restaurant into a famous chili parlor that now has more than 55 locations in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, with most in and around Cincinnati.

The Gold Star Chili Story

Gold Star’s story began in 1964, when Dave, Charlie, Frank, and Basheer Daoud purchased Hamburger Heaven in Mount Washington. At the time, the restaurant was one of the few places in that part of Cincinnati serving Cincinnati-style chili. In 1965, the restaurant was renamed Gold Star Chili to honor the new recipe. Today, Gold Star still describes its chili as small-batch chili made with hand-blended spices from 13 countries. As for those spices, nobody outside of the family knows; it’s a well-guarded secret, and we understand why.

Cincinnati Chili, Coneys, and 3-Ways

Cincinnati chili differs from many other chili styles because it’s commonly served over spaghetti or hot dogs rather than only in a bowl. Gold Star Chili is made for familiar Queen City meals such as 3-Ways with chili, spaghetti, and shredded cheese, as well as cheese coneys topped with chili and cheese on a hot dog bun. The same chili can also be used for chili cheese fries, burgers, nachos, baked potatoes, and other easy meals at home. For shoppers looking for authentic Cincinnati-style chili, Gold Star remains one of the region’s major names.

Gold Star Chili Cans and Seasoning Mix

This collection includes Gold Star Chili 10oz cans, Gold Star Chili 15oz cans, and Gold Star Chili Seasoning Mix, with additional Gold Star products added as they become available. Canned Gold Star Chili gives you a fast way to make coneys, chili spaghetti, 3-Ways, and chili cheese fries without starting from scratch. As for the Seasoning Mix, it gives home cooks another way to prepare Cincinnati-style chili with a familiar regional flavor. These items are popular among former Cincinnati-area residents and everyone else who doesn’t live there.

Gold Star Chili Locations and Community Roots

Beyond restaurant food, the brand also has a visible community role in the Tri-State area. During National Chili Month in October, Gold Star partners with Freestore Foodbank to support childhood hunger programs across Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana. The campaign supports programs such as School Pantry, Kids Café, and Power Pack, which provide meals and food support for children in food-insecure households. Gold Star reports that the partnership has raised more than $200,000 and provided more than 600,000 meals for local children.
