About Charleston Chew Candy
Introduced in 1922 by the Fox-Cross Candy Company, Charleston Chew was created by former stage actor Donley Cross and his business partner Charlie Fox. The company was founded in 1920, and the candy bar was named after the Charleston dance, which became a national craze during the 1920s. The original recipe combined chewy vanilla nougat with a chocolate coating. Nathan Sloane purchased Fox-Cross in 1957, expanded the brand, and promoted freezing Charleston Chew bars before breaking them into smaller pieces, a method fans came to call the “Charleston Crack.” Tootsie Roll Industries acquired Charleston Chew and its manufacturing assets from Warner-Lambert in 1993 and continues to own the brand today.
