About M&M’s Candy

M&M’s Candy was introduced in 1941 after Forrest E. Mars Sr. returned to the United States and established M&M Limited in Newark, New Jersey. Mars partnered with Bruce Murrie, whose family was connected to the Hershey Chocolate Company. Initials from the Mars and Murrie surnames created the M&M’s name. Candy-coated chocolate pieces were supplied to American soldiers during World War II because the outer shell helped protect the chocolate in warm conditions. Mars began printing the familiar lowercase “m” on each piece in 1950, followed by the introduction of Peanut M&M’s in 1954. M&M’s remains part of the Mars family of candy brands.
