Introduced in 1949 by the James O. Welch Company in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Junior Mints combined a creamy peppermint center with a dark chocolate coating. James O. Welch named the candy after Junior Miss, a popular Broadway play that ran from 1941 to 1943. Tootsie Roll Industries acquired Junior Mints in 1993 and continues making them in Cambridge. More than 15 million pieces are produced at the Massachusetts facility each day, continuing a candy-making tradition that began more than 75 years ago.
