PEZ Candy

About PEZ Candy

PEZ Candy was created in Austria in 1927 by Eduard Haas III as a compressed peppermint candy. Its name comes from the German word “Pfefferminz,” using its first, middle, and final letters to form PEZ. Early candies were sold in tins before the first mechanical dispenser debuted at the Vienna Trade Fair in 1949. U.S. operations began in 1952, followed by three-dimensional character heads in 1957 and the first licensed character, Popeye, in 1958. PEZ began manufacturing candy in Orange, Connecticut, in 1973 and remains closely associated with collectible dispensers and rectangular candy tablets.
