Cavalier Candies traces its history to 1922, when George Bond and Ronald Samuel founded Bond and Ronald in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The company initially produced sugar confectionery and chocolate specialties for the Manitoba market. Its fruit slices were made with imported agar seaweed that was soaked, cooked, flavored, shaped, and cooled through a labor-intensive process. Charles Fletcher purchased the business in 1957, expanded the fruit slice collection, developed new packaging, and increased distribution across Canada. In 1967, the company was divided into Cavalier Candies Ltd., for candy manufacturing, and Cavalier Foods Ltd., for imported confectionery products. Cavalier Candies continues producing fruit slices and traditional hard candy in Winnipeg.
