This beloved candy flavor is usually made from vanilla extract or bean, salt to balance sweetness, and dairy, usually heavy cream and butter, which provide a creamy, caramelized taste and texture.

Caramel production dates back to 1000 AD, but the caramel candy we know and love today came much later, in the mid-1800s.
