M&Ms
M&Ms, introduced in 1941 by Forrest Mars Sr. and Bruce Murrie, were inspired by British soldiers eating chocolate pellets with a hard shell during the Spanish Civil War. Initially produced in Newark, New Jersey, M&Ms gained popularity during World War II as they were included in U.S. military rations.
The candies feature a colorful sugar shell and a distinctive “m” stamp introduced in 1950 to prevent counterfeiting. M&Ms have expanded globally and introduced numerous varieties like Peanut M&Ms in 1954. The iconic slogan, “Melts in your mouth, not in your hand,” was introduced in 1949.
Mamba
Mamba, a fruit-flavored chew candy, was introduced in Germany in 1953 by Storck, a German confectionery company. The candy made its way to the U.S. market, gaining a significant following. Mamba candies come in individually wrapped pieces featuring a variety of flavors, such as strawberry, orange, lemon, and raspberry.
Storck, the manufacturer, is also known for other popular candies like Werther’s Original and Toffifee. Mamba is particularly popular in urban areas across the United States due to its affordability and vibrant flavors.
Marpro

Mars
Mars, Incorporated was founded by Frank C. Mars in 1911 in Tacoma, Washington. Initially focused on buttercream candies, the company relocated to Minneapolis in 1920 and rebranded as Mar-O-Bar. Mars achieved significant success by introducing the Milky Way bar in 1923, which led to further expansion.
The Snickers bar was launched in 1930, followed by the 3 Musketeers in 1932. Mars has since become a global leader in confectionery, pet care, and food products, with a presence in over 80 countries. The company is headquartered in McLean, Virginia, and remains privately held by the Mars family.
Marshmallow Peeps
Marshmallow Peeps, produced by Just Born Quality Confections, was introduced in 1953. The company was founded by Sam Born in 1923 in New York City, and later moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. With their iconic chick shape and pastel colors, Peeps quickly became a popular seasonal treat, especially around Easter.
Just Born also produces popular candies like Mike and Ike and Hot Tamales. Marshmallow Peeps are particularly popular in the northeastern United States and have a strong cultural presence, often featured in dioramas and other creative displays.
Mary Jane
Charles N. Miller introduced Mary Jane candies in 1914 in Boston, Massachusetts. Mary Jane is a peanut butter and molasses taffy candy named after Miller’s favorite aunt. The recipe has remained unchanged for over a century, making it a nostalgic treat for many.
Originally produced by the Miller Company, Mary Jane was later acquired by NECCO (New England Confectionery Company) and, more recently, by the Atkinson Candy Company in 2018. The candy remains a favorite in the New England region, celebrated for its vintage charm and enduring flavor.
Mentos
Brothers Michael and Pierre van Melle introduced Mentos in the Netherlands in 1932. Initially a licorice-flavored candy, Mentos evolved into the mint and fruit-flavored chewy mints known today. Production moved to Rotterdam in the 1950s, marking the brand’s international expansion.
In 2001, Mentos became part of the Italian-Dutch corporation Perfetti Van Melle. Mike and Ike

Milk Duds
Milk Duds were created in 1928 by the Hoffman & Company of Chicago. Named for their irregular shapes, these caramel bites covered in a chocolate coating were intended to be round but ended up as “duds.” In 1960, the brand was acquired by Hershey’s.
Milk Duds are a popular movie theater snack in the United States because of their rich, chewy texture. Hershey’s produces Milk Duds in its plants in Hershey, Pennsylvania, continuing the brand’s long-standing tradition in the confectionery industry.
MilkyWay
The MilkyWay candy bar, introduced by Mars, Inc. in 1923, was created by Frank C. Mars and inspired by the taste of malted milkshakes, which were popular then. The bar features nougat topped with caramel and coated in milk chocolate.
Originally produced in Minneapolis, it quickly became a national favorite, achieving significant sales in its first year. The MilkyWay name comes from a popular malted milk drink rather than the galaxy. Over the years, the brand has introduced variations like MilkyWay Midnight and Simply Caramel.
Mounds
Mounds is a coconut-filled candy bar enrobed in dark chocolate. It was introduced in 1920 by the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company, which was founded in New Haven, Connecticut. The company gained popularity during World War II due to sugar rationing, which made coconut an appealing alternative.
Mounds is particularly famous for its “Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don’t” slogan, which it shares with its counterpart, Almond Joy. Today, both brands are produced by Hershey’s and remain popular across the United States.
Mr. Goodbar
Hershey introduced Mr. Goodbar, a chocolate bar with peanuts, in 1925. This candy bar became a quick favorite because it combines milk chocolate and crunchy peanuts. It was one of the first candy bars to feature peanuts, marketed as a nutritious ingredient during its initial launch.
Mr. Goodbar is still produced in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and remains a staple in Hershey’s product lineup. Despite changes in packaging and marketing over the years, its core ingredients and appeal have stayed the same.
