Ohio authorities have issued a public health advisory following the FDA’s expanded recall of Diamond Shruumz mushroom-infused candies. This recall, which includes all flavors of the brand’s chocolate bars, infused cones, and gummies in both micro and mega doses, comes after nearly two dozen hospitalizations and 39 reported illnesses.

The FDA’s investigation revealed that these candies contain muscimol, a chemical in certain mushrooms. The affected individuals experienced severe symptoms such as seizures, depression, agitation, abnormal heart rates, hyper or hypotension, nausea, and vomiting.

The recall affects at least 20 states, including Ohio, Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

The Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) issued the advisory to alert consumers and retailers about the dangers of these products. Despite the recall, the products have remained available in smoke and vape shops and other retail stores across the state. The ODA emphasized that consumers should not eat, sell, or serve any Diamond Shruumz products and should return them to the company for a refund.

Retailers are advised to remove these products from their shelves immediately. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to discuss the recall with their children, as the candy’s colorful packaging may appeal to younger consumers.

The ODA urges anyone who sees Diamond Shruumz products still being sold to contact their Division of Food Safety. This advisory underscores the importance of vigilance and prompt action in ensuring public safety regarding potentially hazardous food products.

If you spot any retailer continuing to sell Diamond Shruumz products, please report it to the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Division of Food Safety at foodsafety@agri.ohio.gov or call them immediately at 614-728-6250.
