With several decades of experience in our niche, we’ve collected a ton of accurate data regarding candy and snack sales, including cracker brands.
In terms of popularity, we’d say that the most scanned items year after year pretty much sums it up! However, before we reveal the top 30 most scanned cracker brands sold in the United States, we must first remind you that the facts that we present to you in this article are not based on our opinion; if this were the case, then our list would look much different.
Indeed, we all have opinions, especially regarding food and our favorite brands. That said, our information derives from factual data only. You may not agree with this our list entirely, however, you’re likely to see one of your favorite cracker brands listed below! If not, please let us know your favorite brand in the comment section below! We still value your opinion the most!
The History of Cracker Brands As We Know And Love Today
According to historical documents and evidence, and to our surprise, crackers are an American idea and creation! In fact, the first cracker ever made was in 1792 by John Pearson from Newburyport, Massachusetts.
As the story goes, Pearson was on a quest to create a sailor-friendly type of biscuit that would last longer than the biscuits they had available at the time. So, after many attempts, he returned to just the basics of flour and water. After baking it, the first cracker, which he named Pearson’s Pilot Bread, was made.
Also known as hardtack or sea biscuits, these crackers became extremely popular among sailors due to their long shelf life. Soon after, Pearson established the first brand of crackers in the world, which he called “The Crown Pilot Cracker.”
The Acquisition of Pearson & Sons Bakery
In 1889, William Moore, owner of National Biscuit Company, acquired Pearson & Sons Bakery, including the first-ever cracker brand, Crown Pilot Crackers. The National Biscuit Company would later become Nabisco, which would continue to make these crackers for more than 100 years! Sadly, they were discontinued in 2008 due to low sales and consumer demand.
With so many different types and flavors of crackers nowadays, Crown Pilot could no longer keep up with the competition. Nonetheless, they’re still remembered by millions of people still living today, so in some ways, they’re still relevant, and who knows, maybe one day they will return! After all, this isn’t the first time being discontinued.
On that note, we wouldn’t recommend waiting around for Nabisco to relaunch this iconic brand of crackers! Instead, you should explore newer and better options! After all, there are hundreds of cracker variants available nowadays! Who wants flour & water-based sea biscuits anyway? We’re not knocking history, but times have changed, and we now have several great options to select from; wouldn’t you agree?

I remember growing up eating oblong shaped cheese crackers sticks by Nabisco in New York City. I believe that the box was red with a picture of these stick crackers on it. Can anyone show a picture of that nostalgic product.
Trying to locate “House Recipe Saltine Crackers” produced by the Sysco Corporation, Houston, Texas 77077.
I am the milk and crackers kid from the 1950s. My mother never stopped eating what we called, poor man’s pudding. It was crushed saltine crackers in a glass with whole milk poured over the top.
I could never serve it to my children, but they watched me eat it with that horrible look on their faces.
I gave them Honey Maid Graham crackers in their lunch boxes, and cold milk to wash it down.
I know the day will come where these companies will close up shop, and then where will we be without our crackers? 😔
For those of you who like Chicken n Bisket have you tried the new Chicken n Biskit Ranch flavor?
