Pumpkin Spice is appearing early this year, not just in lattes but also in America’s favorite cookie. Oreo has re-released its limited edition Pumpkin Spice cookies, featuring a pumpkin-spice flavored cream nestled between two vanilla wafers.
First launched in 2014, Pumpkin Spice Oreos have had an on-and-off presence on store shelves. They made a comeback in 2017 and returned after a five-year hiatus in August 2022. Now, they’re back for the 2023 season, just in time to spice up school lunches.
Produced by Nabisco, Oreo is the top-selling cookie in the U.S. and claims to be the best-selling cookie globally. While the classic Oreo remains the sales leader, the brand has successfully diversified its offerings with limited edition and specialty flavors like Red Velvet and Peanut Butter.
Although these special editions don’t match the original Oreo sales, they keep the brand in the public eye and attract those who prefer flavors other than chocolate. Oreo’s strong social media game has also helped in this regard. The announcement of the Pumpkin Spice Oreo’s return generated significant buzz, with fans clamoring for the return of other limited edition flavors and suggesting new ones.
In a memorable marketing move, Oreo also released the Halloween Boo! Cookies and a Super Mario-themed line, complete with a pre-release campaign and videos. Interestingly, these are classic Oreos in new packaging, proving that sometimes, the original is hard to beat.
