Charleston Chew

Created in 1922, the Charleston Chew is a classic American candy. The candy bar was named after Charleston, a popular dance in the 1920s. The Fox Cross Company, which originally produced the candy bars had an unusual start. Fox Cross was started by a stage actor who fell and injured his back. Unable to perform onstage, Donley Cross became a candymaker in his new career.

The original Charleston Chew is vanilla nougat encased in milk chocolate. Over the span of time and changes of ownership, additional flavors joined the lineup. Varieties with Chocolate, Banana, and Strawberry nougat centers were added to the lineup. Today, the Vanilla, Strawberry, and Chocolate varieties are available. Fans of the bar favor the distinct marshmallowy flavor in the nougat.

Another interesting aspect of the classic chocolate nougat bars is the ability to make the experience your own. Some consume the bar as is at room temperature. Others insist the only way eat it is to freeze the bar. Once frozen, the bar is slammed against a hard surface until it cracks and forms smaller pieces. The bar is then eaten one piece at a time. Those who prefer chewy candies are more inclined to enjoy the bar at room temperature. When frozen, the bar takes on a hard, crunchy texture that eventually becomes chewy.

If you are not a fan of shattering the bar yourself, the bars are also available in a mini size. Minis make it convenient to simply freeze the candies and enjoy them later.
