Jolly Rancher
The Jolly Rancher is a classic American hard candy that is now available in several other textures. The favored hard candies were introduced by a company bearing the name. The company opened shop in 1949 and began as an ice cream store.
Finding ice cream to be a hard sell in Denver during the winter, the store began offering chocolate. As the store opened franchise locations, they added a cinnamon taffy stick to the lineup. Due to the popularity of the cinnamon stick, the company expanded to offer hard candies.
The original company has since changed ownership several times. After acquiring the brand in 1996, Hershey now produces the original hard candies and new varieties under the same label.
The hard candies originally debuted in three flavors: Watermelon, Apple, and Fire Stix. Later flavor additions have included cherry, orange, tangerine, lemon, grape, peach, sour apple, and watermelon. Smoothie varieties, cinnamon, and sour versions are also available.
There are also specialty bags that include themed flavor mixtures. The Hotties bags include Watermelon & Cayenne, Blue Raspberry & Sriracha, Cherry Habanero, and Green Apple and Ginger. In 2013, the brand reintroduced the lemon flavor in an All-Lemon bag. "Fruity Bash" includes Mountain Berry, Strawberry, Pineapple, Orange, and Lemon. In 2019, the Hotties bag was discontinued. The Peach flavor returned and replaced Mountain Berry.
